Makeup Bags guide
Makeup-bag sizes and compartments: measure the usable space
Check makeup-bag interior dimensions, openings, pocket space and loaded clearance. A large exterior or high pocket count does not prove your kit fits.
Measure the items you intend to carry before comparing bag sizes. Then check the usable interior, opening and compartment arrangement. External dimensions and pocket count are useful listing details, but neither proves that your kit can be packed and removed without forcing the closure or compressing its contents.
Start with the limiting items
Record the longest, widest or most awkward items rather than only the total item count. Brushes, rigid compacts and differently shaped containers place different demands on the interior. Include any existing brush case or insert that will travel inside the bag.
Decide what needs to be reached without emptying everything else. A kit that fits as a tightly stacked block may still be inconvenient when the item you use first sits at the bottom.
| Measurement | What to ask for | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Closed outside dimensions | Including any projecting features | The full interior volume |
| Usable interior dimensions | The actual compartment, not shell size | Fit through a smaller opening |
| Opening width and shape | Access with the closure fully opened as directed | Clearance for every rigid item |
| Pocket working size | Space after seams and closures | Capacity from pocket count alone |
| Lid or flap movement | Space needed to open and retrieve items | Operation beneath a shelf |
| Loaded arrangement | Where items and inserts actually sit | A universal products-per-bag capacity |
Separate a fit calculation from a packing result
In a fictional example, an internal compartment 22 cm long and a rigid case 20 cm long leave 2 cm along that dimension. This does not establish fit if the compartment is too narrow, its opening is smaller, or another item occupies that space.
Likewise, multiplying an outside length, width and height produces an outside bounding-box calculation, not a measured usable capacity. Padding, curved corners, seams, pockets and inserts complicate the comparison. Do not present that multiplication as the bag's actual storage volume.
Inspect dividers and openings together
Check whether dividers are fixed, removable or adjustable under the maker's instructions. Moving a divider changes the arrangement; it does not create additional total space. Confirm whether an interior photograph shows the configuration supplied or an optional accessory.
A narrow opening can be the constraint even where the main cavity looks generous. Ask for missing working dimensions rather than assuming a flexible-looking zip opening will stretch enough.
Compare the operating footprint
Measure the place where the bag will be opened as well as where it will be packed. A lid, fold-out section or drawstring arrangement can require extra room. Hanging and flat-lay designs deserve their own comparison if the available counter or support is the main constraint.
Decide from a short fit record
Record the limiting item dimensions, confirmed interior and opening, proposed arrangement and unanswered measurements. If those details support the kit and the access you need, choose the bag whose care also fits your routine. If they remain unknown, ask before buying rather than assigning a fit score.
Record the fit of your kit
Record your kit requirements and the listing information separately. Leave missing measurements unknown; this worksheet does not assign a fit score.

Evidence and source notes
This guide compares documented specifications and practical constraints. It does not report a hands-on product test.
- MUJI UK: Vanity Make Up Box Small (manufacturer; checked 2026-10-24). One makeup-box listing documents a partition arrangement; no independent loaded-fit or usable-capacity measurement.
- MUJI UK: Nylon Handled Pouch Slim (manufacturer; checked 2026-10-24). One pouch listing distinguishes a nylon shell from a polyester lining; no universal nylon care or protection claim.
